He commended the effort of the men of the Lagos Fire Service whose prompt response to their distress call and efficiency at fighting the fire was able to put the fire out eventually.
Recounting her loss amidst tears, Iya Tobi, an occupant of one of the flats that was consumed by the fire told National Weekender that, she was sleeping in her room when she heard people shouting fire outside and immediately ran out of the house.
Mama Tobi whose husband had gone to work said “By the time I ran out of the house I discovered that my roof had already caught fire and before you knew it, the fire was already in my house.”
Still lamenting she said “I don’t know why it has to be me, God where are you! My certificate, my clothes, all my property have been consumed by the fire except this wrapper that I have on me. I have nothing again, everything has been burnt”
Although the cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained as at press time, an occupant who prefers to remain anonymous said that the fire started as a result of a power surge in one of the occupants flat who forgot to power off his electrical equipment before leaving for work.
He said that he has often warned occupants to put off their electrical equipments before leaving the house to avoid incidents like this explaining that, a good part of the building was made of wood.
